Longview Awarded Grant for Technology

June 23rd, 2014

Longview, an Ithacare Community, has been awarded a grant from the Helen Thomas Howland Foundation as administered by the Community Foundation of Tompkins County for “Technology for Seniors to Improve Quality of Life.”

Longview will be using the grant funds to purchase iPad tablet devices for recreational and instructional use for the seniors who reside there. The devices will be used to educate and enable seniors to use technology to help slow memory loss and mental decline through games, puzzles and other types of brain training, as well as improve communication with friends and family in order to combat isolation and loneliness.

The tablets will be used for a variety of activities on a lending and classroom basis. Tablets and e-readers have proven popular with older generations due to the ease of magnifying the text on screen. The illuminated screen heightens contrast between words and background, compensating for loss in contrast sensitivity that older eyes experience. Instruction and support will also be provided in communication methods such as email, social media and video applications such as Skype. Electronic communication is fast and inexpensive and allows seniors to stay in contact with family and friends who are far away, thereby combating loneliness and its health risks.
